Whey protein based barrier coatings with enhanced thermoformability and agglomerated formulations for a range of packaging applications

There is a growing need and significant market opportunity for more sustainable packaging solutions. The ThermoWhey project targets the manufacturing of whey protein based barrier coatings with enhanced thermoformability as well as agglomerated whey protein based coating formulations for a range of packaging applications. As such, after completion of the required further research, like introducing the necessary thermoplastic properties, the participating SMEs will be involved in setting up or supporting the up-scaling for the manufacturing capacity required for full scale production from the whey powder to the final packaging, optimizing the production processes throughout the supply and value chain. ThermoWhey will capacitate MLANG to produce whey protein concentrate (WPC) in line with the protein agglomeration with plasticizers to obtain tailored whey protein, whereas GEBA will optimize the thermoforming process and tools in order to specify the most suitable process parameters and equipment to SERVIPLAST which will upgrade their current machines for the production of whey-coated films that can later be formed into trays, jars, cups and blisters
